What does it mean to be beautiful? People magazine touts its annual Most Beautiful People list. Do you agree with all of their selections? The Pantene model implores, “Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful.” But what do you know of her other than that she has shiny hair? Beauty, like art and music, can be nebulous, polarizing, and truly in the eye of the beholder.

The truth is, we are conditioned in our society to believe there is a certain standard of beauty. And it opens doors. Daniel S. Hamermesh, a professor of economics at the University of Texas in Austin, wrote a book in 2011 (“Beauty Pays,” Princeton University Press) summarizing his research showing the advantages that beauty brings in all aspects of life. Good-looking workers earn more than those with below-average looks; good-looking professors get better reviews from their students; good-looking politicians win more races.

Actor Dustin Hoffman ran head-on into this ugly truth when he was developing the movie “Tootsie.” In this moving interview, Hoffman is brought to tears as he describes how he felt when he realized what women experience … and how he had contributed to that experience.

It touches upon what Aspire tries to do: repair self-esteem by changing appearances that are not deemed socially acceptable and make others more open to seeing the beauty inside.
