Did you know that your face is one of the first places to show signs of aging? Because of this, many people opt to undergo facelift procedures to reduce signs of aging in the face and neck, usually between the age of 40 and 65. At Aspire Plastic Surgery, we perform mini facelifts and full facelifts for our clients, depending on their needs.

So, what type of facelift is best for your beautiful face – a mini or a full?

What is a Mini Facelift?

A mini facelift focuses on the lower half of the face, to target sagging skin around the neck and jawline. This is a great option for patients with mild skin sagging in the initial phases of the aging process. It uses fewer and smaller incisions than a full facelift but is still a surgical procedure.

Incisions are usually made along your hairline or above your ears, which enables the surgeon to pull your skin tissues up to help tighten sagging skin. The length of recovery time can be a bit shorter than that of a full facelift, but the largest difference in recovery is the length of the scar.

What is a Full Facelift?

A full facelift is also referred to as a standard or “traditional” facelift. While a mini facelift focus on the neck area, a full facelift addresses aging in the mid-face and neck areas. This option is more often used for patients with moderate to advanced signs of aging

Because the procedure is more extensive than a mini facelift, recovery time is longer but results are also usually more dramatic.

Preparing for Your Facelift

It’s important to understand that facelifts are surgical procedures, and we recommend choosing a board-certified cosmetic surgeon that has received specific training for facelift surgery. If you have any questions about Dr. Brian Lee at Aspire Plastic Surgery, don’t hesitate to ask!

Whether a mini facelift or a full facelift is the right procedure for you, here are some things to keep in mind before your big day:

  • Don’t wear makeup or jewelry to your appointment.
  • You will need someone to drive you home when you are discharged.
  • Discuss all medications, herbs, and supplements you take with your doctor.
  • If you smoke or use tobacco, you may need to stop using for 4-6 weeks prior to surgery.

What to Expect After Your Procedure

Most patients can resume their normal daily activities after about 2 weeks, though patients should refrain from any strenuous exercise for about 4 weeks. Bruising and swelling are also normal following a facelift procedure. You will likely experience the most about 2 days post-surgery, and then the bruising and swelling will gradually decrease until it’s mostly diminished 10-14 days later.

After your procedure, you will be unable to wear makeup for a period of time, and should also be extremely careful in the sun to prevent sunburn and scarring. Your surgeon will discuss any other specific recovery details with you following your procedure.

What about Long-Term Results?

Mini facelifts and full facelifts are medical procedures that can help reduce the appearance of aging in your face and neck. Results achieved by these surgeries are designed to age naturally with you, but long-term results are not guaranteed as your body continues aging.

However, there are things you can do to help maximize the results of your facelift. Eating a healthy diet and having a regular exercise routine are two lifestyle habits that will help your overall health, which in turn helps to prevent aging. Weight fluctuations can cause your skin to stretch, so maintaining a healthy weight can help extend the results of your facelift. A consistent skincare regimen like SkinMedica is also recommended to protect your skin from aging and keep it healthy.
