Breast implants are one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States, with approximately 300,000 patients each year choosing to enhance their confidence and achieve their desired look.
Despite their popularity, there are still plenty of misconceptions that may create worry or confusion among patients considering a procedure. Let’s discuss seven myths about breast implants. You can also watch this in-depth explanation of the breast augmentation process from Dr. Lee to learn even more.
Myth 1: Breast Implants Only Last 10 Years
Many people believe that breast implants need to be replaced every decade, even if there are no problems. However, many modern implants last 15 to 20 years or more because they are more durable and long-lasting than in the past. Routine care and monitoring with your plastic surgeon can ensure that your implants remain in good condition for many years.
Replacements are typically only necessary if complications arise with the implant, a patient wants to adjust the size or shape for personal reasons, or the patient experiences symptoms associated with Breast Implant Illness (more on that later).
Myth 2: Breast Implants Don’t Feel Natural
A common concern is that implants will look or feel unnatural, but this is no longer the case thanks to advancements in implant technology and surgical techniques.
When placed by an experienced plastic surgeon, breast implants can blend seamlessly with your body. Factors like implant size, placement, and surgical skill also play a role in achieving a natural result.
Myth 3: Breast Implants Increase Your Risk of Breast Cancer
One of the most concerning myths is that breast implants lead to a higher risk of developing breast cancer or make it harder to detect during mammograms. Research has shown that breast implants do not increase the risk of developing breast cancer.
While implants can sometimes make mammograms more challenging, technicians and radiologists are trained to adjust their diagnostic techniques for implant patients to ensure that screenings remain effective.
Myth 4: Everyone Who Gets Breast Implants Will Get Breast Implant Illness
In the last few years, several health concerns have arisen in connection to breast implants, such as Breast Implant Illness.
This has become such a common concern that Dr. Lee created a video series about Breast Implant Illness. One of the myths going around is that everyone is at risk for BII, but that simply isn’t true.
“I believe this has to do with the genes that we inherit from our parents, particularly in a detoxification pathway that’s called the methylation detoxification cycle that is so ubiquitous that it’s estimated to occur a billion times a second in our body,” Dr. Lee says. “If you have inherited defects in this system and then have breast implants, then I think there could be a metabolic type of a response that leads to chronic inflammation.”
He performs a simple cheek-swab genetic test in the Aspire office to help potential patients understand their risks, and discuss the pros and cons.
If an Aspire patient does experience BII, Dr. Lee provides counseling to help patients prepare for and go through the recovery process.
Myth 5: Breast Implants Make Breastfeeding Impossible
Some believe that breast implants prevent women from breastfeeding, but most women with implants can still successfully breastfeed their children.
The ability to breastfeed often depends on the type of surgery performed and where the incisions are made. In most cases, surgical techniques that avoid damaging milk ducts and glands allow women to breastfeed post-surgery without issue.
Myth 6: All Breast Implants Look the Same
Another myth is that all breast implants result in the same generic look, but breast implants are highly customizable to different shapes, sizes, and profiles to suit each patient’s unique body and desired goals.
Plastic surgeons work with patients to create a personalized plan that considers body proportions, lifestyle, and individual preferences to create a look that enhances the natural beauty of each patient.
Myth 7: Breast Implants Are Only for Young Women
There is a misconception that breast implants are only suitable for women in their 20s or 30s, but women of any age can benefit from breast augmentation.
Many women in their 40s, 50s, and beyond choose breast procedures to restore lost volume, improve symmetry, or address changes related to aging. Breast implants can be a great option at any stage of life, as long as you are healthy and have realistic expectations.
