When it comes to breast implant removal, the choice to remove implants can be a deeply personal one. Generally, the consideration tends to come along after you’ve had your implants for a while and are no longer satisfied with how they look or feel. Whether you’re looking to change the size or shape of your implants, need a lift and refresh, or simply want your implants removed entirely, Dr. Brian Lee and our team will make sure you understand all of the options available to you. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the breast implant removal process.
Demystifying Breast Implant Removal
It’s not unusual for women to want their breast implants removed after a period of time. The reasons for breast implant removal can range from medical to aesthetic to personal to physical need. At our Fort Wayne clinic, we ensure every patient’s needs are met with the utmost care.
Breast implant removal is a straightforward procedure that typically takes one to three hours and is performed under general anesthesia to ensure you’re completely comfortable. While there is a recovery period following the procedure, most patients can return to work within a week and resume all normal activities within two to four weeks.
Understanding The Breast Implant Removal Procedure
The breast implant removal procedure starts with a consultation at Aspire Plastic Surgery. Dr. Lee will assess your situation, answer all your questions, and provide you with a personalized treatment plan.
The surgery starts with the administration of general anesthesia. Once that kicks in, Dr. Lee will make a small incision along the lower fold of the breast or around or below the areola. He will then remove the implant and the capsule through this incision. How long it takes to remove the implant can depend on the reason for the removal.
If a patient requests, Dr. Lee can also perform a breast lift during the same session to enhance the shape and position of the breasts. Once the incisions are closed, you can begin the recovery process.
Breast Implant Removal Recovery
As you start the recovery process, Dr. Lee will provide you with detailed instructions on how best to care for your incisions and what to avoid for optimal healing. You’ll also be given a compression garment to aid in healing and reduce swelling and bruising.
For the first few days, you’ll need to avoid showering. You can take a sponge bath or lightly wash your incisions to prevent infection. You’ll also want to avoid strenuous exercise for the first 1-2 weeks. Pushing or lifting anything ten pounds or more should be avoided for the first six weeks. Additionally, you’ll need to sleep on your back to avoid putting pressure on your chest.
It typically takes about six weeks before you are fully healed and can return to your normal levels of activity, but you will likely be able to return to work after 7-10 days. However, the timetable can depend on how strenuous your job is.
