Many qualified patients for submental liposuction have picked up an exercise program or healthy diet, and have begun to lose weight. Ideal candidates have moderate to severe fat beneath the chin area, realistic expectations about treatment and recovery, and understand that submental lipo treatment results and cost will vary based on the significant amount of fat present. Patients should be on a balanced diet to help maintain results post-treatment. If a healthy lifestyle has helped you lose weight but the appearance of a double chin has persisted, submental lipo may be able to help.
Patients should share their full medical history, including prior reconstructive surgery or plastic and reconstructive surgery, current medical conditions, use of blood thinners, blood thinning medications, or herbal supplements, and any history of difficulty swallowing, nerve injury, or uneven smile. Before Your Cosmetic Procedure
Ahead of your treatment, we recommend avoiding alcohol and caffeine, medications such as ibuprofen and aspirin, retinol, and foods high in sodium and sugar. Avoiding these things can help control swelling and bruising afterward. Your consultation typically also involves evaluating skin elasticity, bone structure, and fat distribution. It is important to note that liposuction cannot remove extra skin, and another treatment may be recommended if this is necessary to achieve a chiseled jawline.
Your Jawline Definition Procedure
The submental liposuction treatment can be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending on the patient preference and needs. A small incision is placed strategically in the neck rolls, allowing for the cannula to be inserted just under the skin. Then, the excess fat is suctioned out, thus allowing for a more defined jawline. This minimally invasive surgical approach is performed by our board-certified plastic surgeon.

Your Submental Lipo Recovery
For the first 24 hours after treatment, you will need to avoid hot environments like saunas, hot tubs, or hot showers since these can exacerbate swelling. You should also avoid strenuous exercise during this time. It’s best to sleep on your back with your head propped on a couple of pillows to keep swelling down. Continue to avoid alcohol, caffeine, and sodium for the same reason. We recommend using a cool pack on the area for 15 minutes at a time to help with swelling and discomfort. Swelling is typically at its worst for 3-5 days after treatment, though most patients need about 1-2 weeks of recovery, and swelling and bruising often improve substantially within the first week; longer-lasting residual swelling gradually improves over the following weeks until the swelling subsides. You may also have some slight tenderness, burning, and tingling in the area, but it will subside with time. Follow-up visits are also part of post-operative care.
You may start to notice visible improvement around 4-6 weeks after your first submental lipo session, but noticeable results often develop gradually over time rather than immediately. As the swelling goes down, you can expect to see enhanced results after a few months.
