In a recent newsletter from Dr. Andrew Weil, a leader in integrative medicine, he identifies three reasons why women are more prone to wrinkles around the mouth than men:

  • According to an analysis by dermatologists in the Netherlands, women have fewer oil-producing sebaceous glands around the upper lip, meaning less oil to keep the skin soft and supple.
  • Women (particularly postmenopausal women) have fewer blood vessels in the upper lip area, resulting in less blood flow to the region.
  • The muscles around the mouth are closer to the skin in women than they are in men; this can mean the skin is pulled closer, leading to wrinkles.

Prevention means avoiding the obvious suspects—sun damage and smoking. And staying moisturized is vital; our skin care consultants can recommend an anti-aging moisturizer from the SkinMedica lineup that’s right for you.

We also offer several non-invasive solutions, including SkinMedica chemical peels to rejuvenate your skin; Medical Grade Microneedling to help your skin produce collagen; and fillers to plump those creases.

So while the news for women may sound discouraging, you still have plenty to smile about. Mouth wrinkles are not inevitable! And even if they do appear, Aspire Plastic Surgery and Medical Spa has an arsenal of weapons to correct them.
