Botox® injections can relax lines and smooth out creases.

Dr. Lee and our team of advanced practitioners offer a variety of injectables such as Botox® Cosmetic, Dysport®, Daxxify®, Xeomin®, and Jeuveau®. They care for and treat many patients in the Fort Wayne, Indiana area.

In Fort Wayne, Botox®, Dysport®, Daxxify®, Xeomin®, and Jeuveau® are wonderful options for those who are just showing the first signs of aging. While all use botulinum toxin type A, Daxxify® is distinguished by its longer-lasting effects, with some studies showing results up to six months after treatment. They treat frown lines and smooth out creases that don’t yet warrant surgical or other intervention. These neuromodulators can also effectively treat medical conditions such as lower limb spasticity, cervical dystonia, chronic migraine, overactive bladder, or excessive sweating. Note that treating these conditions involves different doses, injection sites, and techniques than those used for cosmetic purposes.

Your Procedure

Botox®, Xeomin®, Jeuveau®, and Dysport® all use botulinum toxin type A to treat facial wrinkles such as severe frown lines, crow’s feet, and moderate to severe forehead lines. This is accomplished by injecting the botulinum neurotoxin through a very tiny needle into the muscles that are causing the wrinkles. They’re weakened, and no longer able to contract and form facial lines.

Each product has subtle differences that can influence treatment planning:

• Dysport® may spread slightly more, which can affect injection technique.
• Xeomin® is a “naked” botulinum toxin, meaning it contains no accessory proteins, which may reduce allergic reactions.
• Jeuveau®, sometimes called ‘Newtox,’ is primarily marketed for cosmetic use.
• Botox® and Daxxify® offer a balance of cosmetic and therapeutic options, with Daxxify® lasting longer in some patients.

While the injectable treatment often takes just 15 minutes or less, it requires expert knowledge of facial anatomy to ensure only the appropriate muscles are treated and that they are fully immobilized while other facial expressions are preserved. You can rest assured knowing that Dr. Lee and our team of Advanced Practitioners are highly skilled and experienced injectors with a comprehensive understanding of facial anatomy and injectables.

After Your Procedure

You will begin to see results after three to four days, though it will take a week for the full benefit to be apparent. Your smoother skin will last three to four months, at which time the toxin wears off, your muscles return to normal, and your wrinkles reappear. Patients often schedule regular touch-ups to maintain their younger-looking appearance.

Afterward, you may notice a few small prick marks where you received the injections, and the area may be slightly tender. You should avoid rubbing the area for the first few days to avoid spreading the toxin to other muscles. You should also avoid leaning forward for a few hours and avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours after your appointment. You’ll have to forgo facials, microdermabrasion, and other skincare treatments for at least 24 hours after receiving Botox®, Dysport®, Daxxify®, Xeomin®, and Jeuveau®. Otherwise, there is no downtime or recovery required.

Understanding the Risks

While injectables like Botox®, Xeomin®, Jeuveau®, and Dysport® are relatively safe, every procedure comes with risks. Those specific to botulinum toxin injections include:

• Bruising and pain at the injection site
• Redness
• Upper respiratory tract infection
• Headache
• Flu-like symptoms
• Difficulty swallowing
• Nausea
• Temporary facial weakness or drooping
• Trouble breathing
• Allergic reaction

Very rarely, the prescription medicine toxin can spread beyond the treatment area and cause breathing problems, trouble swallowing, muscle weakness, and slurred speech. If you experience these symptoms, please seek medical attention immediately.

Many spas and other facilities are now offering Botox®, Xeomin®, Jeuveau®, and Dysport® without any oversight. But Dr. Lee is a board-certified plastic surgeon, and he has carefully trained his staff to deliver the same thorough, careful approach. Be prepared to share your medical history, including previous surgeries, medical conditions, drug allergies, and current medications. You’ll need to stop taking medications and supplements that thin the blood one week before your appointment, including aspirin, ibuprofen, Excedrin, St. John’s Wart, Vitamin E, fish oil or omega-3s, ginkgo biloba, and ginseng. Tell your doctor if you’ve had previous fillers or have been treated with cosmetic injectables.
