Did you know that there are 2-4 million sweat glands in the human body, and only 2% of them are found in your underarms? 1  As your body temperature rises during stress, high temperatures, fevers, or exercise, sweat is produced by those glands to regulate your internal body temperature.

Though sweat is a completely normal body function, some people are affected by a condition called hyperhidrosis, which results in excessive (and often embarrassing and/or uncomfortable) sweating. It is estimated that approximately 3% of the population suffers from hyperhidrosis. 2

Excessive sweating may include things like sweating so much under your arms that it soaks through your shirt, sweating during a cold day in the middle of winter for no apparent reason, or having feet that sweat so much that your shoes get wet and slippery inside.

There are a variety of other health conditions that may cause excessive sweating, including fever, menopause, heart conditions, thyroid conditions, medication side effects, and more. However, many cases of excessive sweating are not related to an underlying health issue and may be able to be treated with miraDry®.

What is miraDry®?

miraDry® is a non-invasive treatment that applies thermal energy directly to the underarms to safely destroy the sweat and odor glands located there. Your body does need to produce sweat to maintain a proper body temperature, but eliminating the 2% of sweat glands from your underarms won’t affect your body’s ability to produce sweat from the remaining sweat glands that are located throughout the rest of your body.

miraDry® procedures are performed by one of our licensed, trained providers in an outpatient treatment that lasts approximately 2 hours. This FDA-approved procedure has been clinically proven to have immediate results in as little as one treatment.

During the procedure, local anesthesia is given to ensure the patient won’t experience any discomfort throughout the treatment. The skin is then marked with a temporary tattoo before the area is treated with miraDry®.

Once the glands are destroyed, they don’t grow back, which permanently reduces underarm sweat and odor. On average, patients who receive this treatment see an 82% sweat reduction and an 89% odor reduction from their underarms (though individual patient results may vary.)

Most patients who receive the treatment describe it as painless, and regular activity is normally resumed right away. Patients may experience swelling, sensitivity, bruising, and numbness for several days after treatment. Also, a break from exercise for several days is recommended.

More than 140,000 treatments of miraDry® have been administered to patients worldwide. It is a great solution for anyone suffering from hyperhidrosis, or any patient simply wanting to reduce underarm sweat and/or odor.

So, how can you tell if you sweat too much?

It can be hard to quantify “how much is too much” sweat, but most people know their body and are able to work with their doctor to confirm an excessive sweating diagnosis. It is estimated that there are 37 million people in the United States who suffer from hyperhidrosis and/or excessive sweating. 3 Don’t be embarrassed, you aren’t alone and we can help!
