About miraDry Axillary Hyperhidrosis Treatment Results
miraDry is proven effective for underarm hyperhidrosis, called axillary hyperhidrosis. It also treats axillary osmidrosis, bad smelling sweat. The Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy published a study in 2013 as part of which 11 patients underwent miraDry treatment.
At seven months after the treatment, 83.3% of these patients showed improvement. This improvement was from intolerable sweating that always interfered with life to tolerable sweating that only sometimes interferes with life. Problems with foul odor improved for 93.8% of these patients.
A similar study from the University of British Columbia in 2012 showed miraDry reduced axillary hyperhidrosis by 82% for over 90% of patients.
Your miraDry Treatment
To treat you for axillary hyperhidrosis, Dr. Brian Lee and his team at Aspire Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa use a handheld device that delivers controlled electromagnetic energy to your underarm skin. The treatment targets the area of sweat glands beneath your underarm skin. The delivered energy causes a process called thermolysis, decomposition of the sweat glands using heat. At the same time, the device cools and protects the top layers of your skin.
You can expect immediate results that last, as sweat glands are not believed to grow back after miraDry treatment. Most people need only one to two treatments with miraDry to achieve these results. Your procedure will be quick and comfortable, lasting around 2 hours. We encourage you to bring headphones to enjoy music and relax during your procedure!
When you go through miraDry treatment, you receive local anesthesia by injection at the beginning of your session. You can expect to feel minimal discomfort if any. You can also return to your regular daily routine immediately following your appointment.
Some people need a mild over-the-counter medication for pain relief. Dr. Lee also recommends using ice packs for a few days. You will need to keep the area clean by gently cleaning with hot water and mild soap. Common side effects of the procedure include underarm redness, tenderness and swelling for a few days. Some people experience numbness and tingling in armpits and upper arms that last for a month to five weeks. You should also refrain from vigorous activity for a few days!
About two weeks or so after treatment you will experience some sweating in the treated area. This comes from the swelling you experienced after the procedure, as that swelling dissipates.
Will miraDry work for me?
Everyone experiences unique results from miraDry treatment. But the average results after two appointments are about 82% sweat reduction. Some people need a third session. But if you receive a third treatment, this usually takes place after a simple starch-iodine test that identifies remaining sweat glands for precise targeting. Some sweat glands are too deep to treat. Rarely some sweat glands are resistant to treatment.
