In addition to placing extra value on family time and togetherness, this unprecedented period in world history is also making us all antsy to explore and enjoy the outdoors, especially as temperatures warm. In fact, the New York Times recently covered how the trend of getting outdoors is sweeping the nation and impacting nearly every state.

But more time outdoors also comes with great responsibility.

We must still stay at least six feet from others and, of course, wear sunscreen with an adequate SPF daily, whether it’s bright and sunny or overcast and gray. Once we venture outside of our homes, sunscreen is the only way to ensure that our skin is protected from the sun’s harmful rays.

This includes everyone. No matter our age or the fairness of your skin, we all need sunscreen as we enjoy the pleasures of being outdoors by riding bikes, taking walks, spending time with our kids, and more.

When is Sunscreen Required?

As tedious as it may seem at times, it’s important to wear sunscreen whenever going outside for longer than 20 to 30 minutes, but some experts recommend that we apply it even when you’re running errands.

When you’re in direct sunlight for an extended period of time, it’s important to reapply sunscreen every 90 to 120 minutes. If we’re performing a sweat-inducing activity, it may be a good idea to apply it even more frequently.

“The American Academy of Dermatology always recommends an SPF of 30, because it is clinically proven to be a sufficient amount of protection to reduce or minimize the adverse effects of sunlight,” David Colbert, a New York City dermatologist, told Allure magazine.

Skincare Benefits

But what are the adverse effects of sunlight? Well, for one, its harmful rays cause premature aging, including wrinkles, sagging skin and age spots.

This is because the sun can cause the collagen and elastin (both important proteins) in your skin to deteriorate. As this happens, the affected areas will look less firm and elastic.

While there are beauty routines and other methods to help reduce signs of aging, it’s always best to be preventative when possible. The only ways to accomplish that is to avoid going outside, covering yourself from head-to-toe if you do go outside or simply wear an appropriate amount of sunscreen.

Protect Against Cancer

Of course, your appearance isn’t the only reason wearing sunscreen is vital. Continued exposure to ultraviolet rays can cause skin cells to mutate and become cancerous.

While it may not induce the same level of fear as other types of cancer, skin cancer is still very serious and must be dealt with immediately. According to SkinCancer.org, more than 9,500 people are diagnosed with skin cancer every day in the United States, and two people die of the disease every hour.

Depending on the severity, patients may need to undergo surgery, chemotherapy, or other forms of treatment.

Sound painful, costly, and tragic? It is, which is why taking a couple of minutes each to apply sunscreen can save lives. Literally.
